Abstract

This thesis examines advancements and ongoing needs in paediatric liver, intestinal, and pancreatic transplantation. It comprises nine publications, including seven main papers and two appendices structured into three sections:

Novel Aetiologies: This section discusses new diagnostic entities, such as a post-COVID acute liver disease in children, a genetic liver disease with unique management needs, and a rare tumour involving the liver, gastrointestinal tract, and pancreas.

Areas of Need and Further Research: This section covers drug-induced liver disease (DILI), biliary disease, and neonatal liver disease, highlighting areas for improved diagnosis and treatment.

New and Emerging Management Strategies: This section presents new techniques like bedside ultrasound for rejection monitoring in intestinal transplant patients and explores outcomes of multi-transplant procedures and islet cell transplantation (TP-IAT) for hereditary pancreatitis.

Overall, the thesis explores diagnostic advancements, emerging diseases, and innovative management strategies in paediatric hepatology and transplantation.
